What Shipping Our Own Product Taught Us
By TokenBurners Team
Why we built a product first
TokenBurners is a brand-new studio. Before anything else, we wanted proof — for ourselves, and for anyone who works with us later — that we can actually ship, not just describe how we'd ship. StoryBurners is that proof: our own product, our own uptime, our own support inbox, our own bill when something breaks at 2 a.m. Nobody else's spec to lean on, and no one else to hand the consequences to.
The problem we picked
Coming up with a fresh story idea, and then actually turning it into a script, is the part of content creation that eats the most time before a single word gets filmed. Writers and creators don't usually get stuck on the idea or the script in isolation — they get stuck in the gap between them. So StoryBurners is built around that gap specifically: describe the kind of story you want, get a batch of concepts back, pick one, and generate a script sized word-for-word to how long your video actually needs to be. Not a chatbot you have to prompt-engineer — a tool with exactly two jobs, done well.
Credits, not a subscription
We priced StoryBurners pay-as-you-go instead of monthly, on purpose. A subscription is a bet the user makes on us before they've gotten any value — and we're not in a position to ask anyone for that kind of trust on day one. A credit, spent only on a successful generation and refunded on anything that errors, is a bet we make on the product being good enough to keep them coming back. New accounts start with a free bonus of credits specifically so that bet gets tested before any money changes hands.
Speed was a feature, not an optimization
We built the generation pipeline on Groq rather than defaulting to whatever API we already had lying around, because for this specific product, latency isn't a nice-to-have — a five-idea batch that takes thirty seconds breaks the "no blank page" feeling we were actually going for. The "Real" story mode, which grounds a concept in actual current events via live web search, adds real value but also real speed pressure, since it needs to stay fast even when it's doing more work per request.
What this taught us before client work even starts
Running the infrastructure, billing, and support for a product ourselves, start to finish, is exactly the kind of ownership we want to bring to every project — client work included, once it begins. It's one thing to say that; StoryBurners is us proving it to ourselves first.
